Autobiography

Intelligent, Skillful, Adaptable

High school in Plant City, Florida - A place most notable for being the winter strawberry capital of the world. Aside from the temperate climate and abundant fruit - Florida wasn't for me. So, I started traveling young and often. After high school I was fortunate to easily get work following my father from job to job as an assistant field engineer in industrial and commercial construction. Because I was my fathers son in a good old boys system I floated from trade to trade and was taught what I needed to learn to work between the office and the field to understand what was needed and expected from all of the teams for which I had to coordinate data. After a few years working in construction I was feeling guilty about destroying natural land to build a gas/coal power plant. Shortly after I quit construction, to focus on yoga, I met the "guru" of the US branch of the Himalayan Tradition. At his suggestion I moved to the ashram to study yoga and do some soul searching. After three months of intensive study and practice it was time for me to go back to work for society. In pursuit of ethical work I tried community centered organic farming, which I enjoyed because it provided a "lifesytle" and not "just a job". In the end farm labor didn't pay enough to feed the travel bug. I explored other "healthy options" for work and decided to try to get into Yoga Therapy. Rather than getting certified in the tradition I'd been studying for a long time I went to learn about Theravada Buddhism and Thai Yoga Therapy - and go international with my travel for the first time! Before going, I wanted to learn basic Thai. So for 3 months I ate Thai Sushi as often as I could, and put my construction skills to use in trade for sushi - and language lessons. This is when I learned that work for trade is at a strong economic advantage to work for hire. After studying Thai Yoga Therapy in Chiang Mai, Thailand, I moved to Massachusetts to find that studio based work was not ideal for travelers. Next, I moved to Alaska to work as a deck hand on boat tours for a summer. Having seen most of the USA, and finding that money in tourism is much greater for people with language skills, I wanted to travel to learn one. I knew very little about Chinese culture, so I decided it might offer the most reward of the major languages, and certainly it would be the most challenging. In Beijing, I assisted in recruitment at a cultural exchange center for a short term contract, which was horrible, and interesting. The following three years in China I taught English classes and tutoring. I was able to study kungfu months of Kungfu in the Wudang Mountains doing translation in exchange for room, board, and tuition. When a mysterious (and painfully long) hand injury made hard labor uncomfortable I quit farming and spent a year in San Francisco producing events and teaching about Chinese tea. In Vegas I have worked for some high profile events, like CES, the World Tea Expo, and as Wine Staff for the Power of Love Gala. For the past 3 years I have been slowly doing more professional photography and social media, and will be starting to look for work doing basic web development over the next few months. Feel free to contact me about any work I may be well suited to.
